Cheryl Batty, M.Ed.

I have taught Nursery School,

Kindergarten, and Grade One students

for the past ten years.  Through

teaching, supervising and directing

nursery school programs I have

developed enriched programming for

four month to five year olds focusing on developing their social, cognitive, artistic, gross-motor, linguistic and affective development.  I see first hand the tremendous value children receive from early learning experiences.   In 2009 I fulfilled a life-long dream of establishing Ashworth Preschool and Kindergarten in my own home.

I am committed to lifelong learning for my students and myself.  I have completed the Master of Education program, at the University of Toronto.  My research was focused on writing curriculum and the use of portfolio driven student led conferences as a method of assessment.   I am very excited to use this knowledge to help me design age-appropriate curriculum for young children and to communicate effectively with parents about their child’s development.

Additionally, I have received extensive training in the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Primary Years Program, and have implemented trans-disciplinary and inquiry-based programs.  Furthermore, I am a reading specialist having completed the Reading parts 1,2 and 3 additional qualification courses, University of Toronto, that have strengthened my abilities to teach young children to read, to assess children’s reading abilities, to help struggling readers and to conduct and implement action research.  Finally, I have completed a Special Education (Learning Disabilities) additional qualification course, University of Toronto, to ensure the needs of all of the children are met.

For three years I taught Kindergarten and Grade One at Camelot Academy in Durham, North Carolina, as well as served as the Head of Lower School for the 2006 school year. I established the IB Primary Years program there, as well as the use of student-led conferences, through conducting training sessions with the Lower School teachers.

Previously I taught the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Primary Years Program to Grade One and Senior Kindergarten students at Sunnybrook Private School in Toronto.

I strongly believe in the importance of creating a loving, safe environment for young children that allows them every possible opportunity to stimulate their minds.
